Feature Club: Manly Warringah Gymnastic Club
Manly Warringah Gymnastics first opened its doors to the public in 1978 with a foundation membership of 6. Since then, the club has been serving their community as a not-for-profit sporting corporation for over 40 years, having seen over 22,000 members pass through their doors in the Northern Beaches. With over 250+ separate classes running throughout the week, Manly is one of only 3 clubs across NSW with over 2500 members. From simply running a program out of a public hall in Allambie, to now having a purpose built gymnasium, the club has established a program that caters for all. From Kindergym all the way through to International representatives in MAG, WAG, Tumbling and GFA.
In 2018, Manly Warringah Gymnastic Club won the Gymnastics NSW Men’s Gymnastics Overall club of the year award, as well as the Men’s Levels Coaching team of the year. The clubs objective is very simple and seems to shine bright through their results as well as their culture, “To give every member the opportunity to reach the highest level that they are each capable of achieving… to one child the goal may be to do a cartwheel, to another it may be to become an Olympic champion”.
Ian Hardy, CEO of MWGC, tells GNSW that the club has achieved a lot over the years, with a highlight being winning the GNSW Overall Club of the year awards in 2013 and 2014. “What are most proud of? The entire team, all 58 of them… the energy and synergy is unique” – Ian Hardy.
At the recent NSW Senior State Championships, Manly gymnasts claimed 4 of the All-around golds in the MAG and WAG events, as well as multiple individual apparatus state titles and medals across the board.
Congratulations Manly Warringah Gymnastic Club on a fantastic 2018 and start to 2019!
