5 Life Mottos Every Gymnast Learns
1. Hard Work beats Talent, if Talent doesn’t work hard
Like everything else in life, those who work harder may not be the best… YET. There comes a time and a place when hard work will do nothing but shine.
2. If at first you don’t succeed, try, try, try again
Gymnastics is a sport based on repetition, we live by the saying ‘practice makes perfect’. It’s not only about training the body to do the skills, but also familiarising it and exercising the mind to eliminate fear and doubt. There’s only one way to nail that tricky skill, try that scary flip; it’s to try, fall and try again (and again, and again, and again!)
3. Keep calm and carry on
There’s no time for tantrums in the gym; you fall, you stand back up and you carry on. Watch any routine and you’ll see a moment of uncertainty and hesitation after a mistake, but there’s no way to go but onwards.
4. What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger
There is physical pain, and there is mental pain. In gymnastics, both are exercised daily. Sometimes, a day of training just isn’t going to plan and you wonder why you put yourself through the gruelling regime. But then you wake up, and it’s a new day, and you realise after a few more of them that you’ve become a stronger, older and wiser person than you were before.
5. Be where your feet are
I mean literally, sure. But more importantly, to be present in every moment you find yourself in is possibly one of the most important skills to acquire. After all, how else can you celebrate your successes if you pass them by? Yes, chase your goals, but make sure you find stillness in the moments you should savour.
