NSW Athletes shine bright at Special Olympic World Games

Gymnastics NSW wish to congratulate the outstanding performances of Team Australia at the 2019 Special Olympic World Games, held in Abu Dhabi.

NSW athletes Imogen  (Yotala Gymnastics), Ellen (YMCA  Bankstown City) and Chelsea  (PCYC Campbelltown), were among six Australian athletes selected for the team, returning with a total of 12 medals between them. Leading the team was NSW Gymnastics for All Committee Member Natalie Johnson (YMCA Bankstown City).

Special Olympics champion the ability of all people, providing opportunities for participation for those in our community living with intellectual disability. SO seek to always provide equal opportunity for their participants with the team selected at Special Olympic National Games in 2018.

SO is judged differently to FIG artistic gymnastics, with the final score out of 20 points. There are 4 levels of difficulty,  with many athletes often spending many years on each level before progressing onto the next skill. Each of the selected NSW athletes have been working tirelessly  over the past few months in preparation for competition , and we could not be prouder of their outstanding performance!
