Special Olympics School Gala Day
When a team work together on an exciting new goal, magic happens. This is the case for the recent Special Olympics School Gala Day, held in partnership with Gymnastics NSW, Special Olympics NSW and Australia, gymnastics school provider GYM-MAN and gymnastic club YMCA Bankstown City.
While coaching students in the Support Unit at Albion Park Public School, GYM-MAN owner Michael Bastion saw an opportunity to provide equal opportunity for the students in his schools.
Twelve months later, over fifty students from three schools came together to showcase their hard work in front of teacher and families. Host club YMCA Bankstown City donated four buses and their drivers for the event, as well as their entire gymnastics facility for the day.
For Michael, the only goal was to see happy gymnasts participating.
“GYM-MAN staff have been working with our school’s Support Units to teach the Special Olympics inclusions programs. The kids have all worked so hard, and it’s awesome to see them all here today loving gymnastics.” stated Bastion.
“One of our students, Finn, is in a wheelchair but that has never stopped him. The only student from his school, he has worked so hard and was great to see him joining in with kids from all over Sydney to show his gymnastics, said Bastion.
Special guest judges from Gymnastics NSW and Special Olympic NSW/ACT lent their expertise, including 2018 Special Olympic World Games medalist Chelsea Palmer.
“Everyone came together so that young athletes could participate. That is what gymnastics is all about.”
