Aerobic World Championships and World Age Wrap Up
Congratulations to the NSW Aerobic gymnasts who represented Australia at the 17th FIG Aerobic Gymnastics World Championships!
NSW had eight athletes attend the competition, held from June 16-18 in Portugal.
The AeroDance team performed wonderfully and scored 15.900 to be one of the reserves for the finals. The team was made up of Juliah Tolentino, Madison Yazbek, Matilda Narvo, Carissa Uno, Grace Kleppich, Mercedes McIntyre, Elian Jabbour and Deborah Greenbaum.
In the group category, Carissa, Grace, Deborah, Matilda and Mercedes scored a total of 16.755 points, including a difficulty score of 8.050 in qualification.
Ahead of the competition, Deborah said she loves the feeling of walking out onto the competition floor.
“That feeling is like nothing else,” she said. “My favourite part about competing internationally is being able to represent my country in the sport that I love as well as meeting and making friends with so many athletes from around the world.”
The 22-year-old competed in the trio category with two gymnasts from Victoria – Annabel Muttdon. The trio scored 16.814 in the qualification round.
The all-NSW trio, made up of Carissa, Grace and Kleppich, also competed and scored 15.720 in qualification.
The “sassy, jungle themed” routine was a departure from the group’s usual dramatic style, said Grace after the event.
“This year, with a new code of points we wanted to do something a bit different, a bit fun,” she said in an interview with Gymnastics Federation Portugal.
Described as the happiest country in the world by the event organisers, the Australian contingent have made us all proud!
A special mention also goes to Angelina Chalabov, who debuted on the international stage at the 10th FIG Aerobic Gymnastics World Age Group Competitions held from June 10–12.
